Family Therapy

Family therapy is useful when family members from different generations or who are not in a romantic relationship (such as siblings) are affected by conflict or hard feelings. I work with families in which everyone is an adolescent or older. For families with younger children, I refer to a therapist who specializes in working with children.

I have helped families work through disagreements, process longstanding feelings, or finally put to words something they have been unable to express. Some family work requires only limited sessions to resolve a problem, while other times a family benefits from continuing to meet for a longer period of time.

It's important to acknowledge that not all family therapy is “successful.” It’s not always the case that everyone is able or willing to engage in the process with a collaborative mindset, so sometimes the outcome does not result in a feeling of closure for everyone involved. In my experience, however, most family members who participate in therapy sessions together find it to be a worthwhile and rewarding experience.
